Deborah Pope Interview Topics
1. Introduction - who are you, what is your role within the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation (brief, establishing)
2. Establishing the overall mission of what the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation does (in terms of awarding authors and uplifting diverse children’s lit)
3. A statement on the cultural significance of Ezra’s work, particularly with regard to BIPOC representation/inclusion in children’s literature (this might be included in #2 above?)
4. A statement about the mission to expand the footprint and impact of The Snowy Day (and all of Ezra’s books)
5. How did opera come to be one of the art forms chosen for this? Alternatively, what was the path that lead to the collaboration with HGO? (this is a hand-off question that will help me link to other interviews)
6. What does expanding the footprint mean in terms of audience impact?
7. What was it like working with Andrea, can you talk about her unique understanding of the source material (this is a hand-off question that will help me link to other interviews)
8. From Andrea: This year marks the 35th year of the EJK Awards, whose mission is to usher in new and diverse talent to the field. This aligns perfectly with HGO’s mission of supporting and launching new works, as well as, with this opera, ushering in new talent (Joel and Andrea are each making their opera debuts).
