Final checklist:

Get ready...

  • Download and install the most recent version of Zoom and Logitech Camera Settings on your computer.
  • Look over your interview topics and think about the main points you'd like to communicate during our recording session. You're welcome to have notes on hand.
  • Position your computer near a source of natural light (in front of you, not behind), with one or two additional sources of light (ring light, LED light, household lamp) at the ready.
  • Make sure you can hardwire your computer to your router via ethernet cable.
  • Turn OFF all fans, AC, and appliances (dishwasher, laundry machine, etc), and position your computer far away from your refrigerator.
  • Wardrobe tips:
    • Avoid stripes, polka dots, or other busy geometric patterns (they show up poorly on camera).
    • Avoid jewelry that makes noise when you move.
    • No visible logos or intellectual property on clothes, please.
  • Bring a little production design to your interview background!
    • Find someplace with warm sound. Rooms with furniture and carpet are best, avoid empty rooms with high ceilings.
    • If your room is uncarpeted, lay blankets and/or towels under your chair/feet to help reduce echo.
    • Tidy up and reduce clutter to help keep all eyes on you.
    • Avoid reflective background surfaces (like picture frame glass) and recognizable brands or IP in the background

Get set...

  • Computer plugged into power source
  • Phone plugged into power source
  • Webcam and Snowball microphone connected via USB
  • USB hub and lavalier iPhone adaptor at the ready (if needed)
  • Lavalier microphone clipped onto your clothes
  • Source of natural light in front of you (not behind)
  • Additional lamp(s) available to fill in the light
  • A plain white sheet of paper near your computer
  • Bottle of water and tissues within arm's reach
  • If you're wearing makeup, have it nearby for touch ups
  • Your own notes, any material you'd like to reference
  • Shut down any devices actively using wifi/internet in your home (streaming services, video games, background apps on your computer)
  • Turn off your phone ringer and any other alarms or devices in your home that make noise.

Go!

On your interview day, login to the Zoom invitation you received with your interview scheduling e-mail. Can't find the invite? E-mail or text me on 415-845-3434 and I'll resend it. This information can also be found on this site at www.annaliseophelian.com/[your first name]

All of the information in this setup guide is designed to help you prepare, but don't worry: I'll be walking you through every step of audio and video capture, and can troubleshoot any problem areas.

Once we're connected on Zoom, I'll walk you through doing a lavalier test recording and sending that to me for review before we begin the interview.

If you glaze over or don't have the time to dig into the settings, the most important thing is you've set up your physical space for the interview and downloaded all necessary apps. We can do the rest together!
